For people who are on the move constantly, power banks are an important accessory to have in their gadget kitty. If you’re traveling and you are away from a power source, a dedicated battery pack comes in handy to juice up your smartphone, laptop, camera, and other electronic gadgets.

But before you purchase a power bank you need to know certain important things. The things that will make or break your buying decision. 1. Battery Capacity and Power Output

Though it is not the be all and end all, when buying a power bank the first factor to look for is the advertised battery capacity. Confused? Let me explain.

Power banks capacity varies from product to product depending on the number of cells in the power bank. It may start from as low as 2,000 mAh to as high as 30,000 mAh.

Based on your use case, you have to choose the desired battery capacity. If you just need a pocket-sized power bank to juice up your smartphone or smartwatch once, a smaller capacity battery pack will be enough.

But if you are traveling a lot and you need to charge your laptop (Laptop should have USB-C port) and smartphone at least twice, a bigger battery capacity is advised. Ideally, a power bank having battery capacity between 10,000 and 20,000 mAh will be perfect for most people.

The power input and output of the power bank is also very important. A higher power output means that your device will charge at a faster speed and higher input power increases the charging speed of power bank itself.

Normally the power output found in battery packs is either up to 12 Watts (5V, 2.4A or 5V, 2.1 A, Normal charging) or 18 Watts (9 V, 2 A, Fast charging). For faster charging of your device, an output port having 9V, 2A rating is advised.

A higher input power means that the power bank can quickly charge itself up when it is plugged to a power source. Here also check for a 9V, 2A rated input port.  

2. Actual Battery Capacity, Conversion Rate, and Effective Battery Output

One of the reasons why I said advertised battery capacity is not the be all and end all is because of conversion rate and effective battery output. Even though a power bank may have an advertised battery capacity of 10,000 mAh, you must have noticed that you were not able to charge your 3,000 mAh smartphone battery even thrice.

This is where the concept of conversion rate and effective battery capacity comes into the picture.

Batteries inside the power banks are usually rated at 3.7V. The battery capacity listed by the manufacturer will be based on this rating. That is, if it is supplying power at 3.7V to a device it will be having the advertised battery capacity.

But the USB output from the power bank is rated at 5V or 9V. The actual capacity of the power bank will be based on this rating. There is an equation as well to calculate the actual battery capacity.

Actual Battery Capacity = (3.7 x Advertised Battery Capacity / 5)

There is also a problem of power loss in transmission and power leak over a period of time from the power bank. That’s where conversion rate comes into the picture.

Let’s clarify your confusion through an example.

Suppose a manufacturer sells a power bank with an advertised capacity of 10,000 mAh and conversion rate of 90 % (this is advertised by some brands, but some brands don’t reveal this number).

The actual capacity of that power bank if the power is supplied to a smartphone via 5V output port will be ( 3.7 x 10000 /5 ) = 7400 mAh.

With the conversion rate of 90%, the effective battery output will be ( 90% of 7400 mAh) = 6660 mAh.

That’s 66% of the advertised battery capacity! Quite a letdown, isn’t it?

The bigger and better brands have found a workaround to provide the maximum effective output at faster-charging speed through the innovative implementation of fast charging technologies.

In any case, look at user reviews and expert recommendations on power bank before you buy them so that you don’t get fooled by the battery capacity advertised.

3. Number and Type of Output Ports Available

A power bank may be used to charge multiple devices simultaneously or you may want to charge at a different Ampere according to the device specification.

Some power bank has only 1 output port under 15W (5V, 2.1A or 5V, 2.4A) and some have 2 or 3 ports at 12W or 18W (9V, 2A or 6V, 1.5A).

So before buying your power bank make sure that it has enough output ports satisfying your needs. I would prefer at least 2 output ports.

Most of the power banks in India has only micro USB input ports available. As the industry is moving towards USB Type C ports, it is future proof to go for a power bank having USB-C port for power input and output.

4. Safety, Design and Build Quality

Safety, design and build quality of power banks are also an important aspect in enhancing the user experience of a power bank.

As batteries are flammable objects and there is a chance of explosion, it is important that battery packs like power banks have followed a rigorous safety standard. Notable brands have different layers of circuit protection to mitigate the risks.

In short, safety should be an important factor in your buying decision.

When it comes to the design aspects, no one wants to buy an ugly looking power bank. As you will be using it on the go for charging, a good design for your power bank add an extra layer beauty into it and compels you to take it along in your journey.

Apple's iPhone 7 set to feature curved glass made from LIQUID metal that is 'tough and scratch resistant'

Apple's next iPhone will be cased in curved glass made from liquid metal, according to insiders. An analysts advising Apple investors claims the iPhone 7 will have a smooth comfortable grip made of glass. The news comes two months after the tech firm revisited a patent filed in 2013, which proposed a curved 'glass' case made from an intricate fusion of metals melted together. The design - made from Bulk Amorphous Alloy, which is a mix of titanium, nickel, copper and zirconium melted together - is said to have the smooth texture of glass and the rigid sturdiness of rubber. It was first floated in a patent application filed by Apple in 2013. And yet, despite widespread excitement over the unique design, it still hasn't reached the general public. But now Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at KGI Securities who has a track record of accurately predicting Apple's next steps, has told investors the curved glass case will be brought out for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

Rumored Add On Features

Chances of iPhone 7 to be water proof are really high
Patent has been submitted and though the research is still going on but we are expecting Apple to introduce this feature from the next generation phones.

Gesture pass-code(s) are quite popular amongst the Android users and we might expect the same in iOS platform as well. In the iOS 9 platform we have to use a 6 digit pass-code which the users are not at happy to use. Gesture entry technique patent has been already submitted by Apple and gesture pass-code might be integrated in iPhone 7.

In the next generation phones, SIM card is expected to be integrated within the phone and it aligns with different carriers and has the same feature as the normal SIM card. Introduction of this feature in iPhone 7 is going to make the phone far more secured.

Wireless charging unit was expected to arrive along with iPhone 6s, however it was not introduced. So we are expecting Apple to introduce wireless charging option in the next generation phone.

It goes without saying that iPhone 7 will be powered by iOS 10 and therefore it will flaunt all the new features that are being included in the next generation iOS platform.

Storage Capacity
We have been requesting Apple to introduce expandable memory in iPhones from a long time. But our requests have remained unheard. So it is our earnest request again that iPhone 7 comes with expandable memory capacity that will allow us to buy the basic model of iPhone and then supplement it with a MicroSD card with greater capacity.

iPhone 7 base model should come with greater memory as the iOS takes away half of the space of the phone and when the phone gets updated, there is a lot more space crunch. So the base model of iPhone 7 should come with at least 32 GB memory.

iPhone 7 Camera
iPhone 7 is going to be integrated with a 12MP primary and 5MP secondary camera just as it is present in iPhone 6S. However, the main attraction as far as iPhone 7’s camera is concerned will be the performance booster that will be added to it. Firstly, it might be equipped with OIS. Secondly, the recent leaks suggest that it will come with a bigger lens that will let in more light and thus ensure better quality picture.

iPhone 7 Display
We have been expecting an iPhone with edge to edge display from a long time and though our expectation has not been met still now, but we are keeping our hopes high even this time. Recently, a patent was submitted which showed a display with bumpers at the four edges. This will protect the screen from getting cracked if it accidentally falls off your hand. However, Apple keeps submitting different kinds of patents which are not in use still now, so whether this is going to be realized this time or not, we are not sure. 3D Touch feature which was present in its predecessors will be present in iPhone 7 as well and might be with additional features.

Apple to remove headphone jack, but bigger upgrades planned for iPhone 8 in 2017
Apple Inc. plans to break with its recent pattern of overhauling the design of its flagship iPhone every two years and make only subtle changes in the models it will release this fall, according to people familiar with the matter.

Among other things, those people said, Apple's (AAPL) newest phones will maintain the current 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays. Those are the sizes of the larger-display models Apple introduced in 2014, and refreshed with newer models last fall.

The biggest planned change in this year's phones is the removal of the headphone plug, which will make the phone thinner and improve its water resistance, said people with that matter. The Lightning connector will serve double-duty as a port for charging the phone and for connecting headphones, they said. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said he expects the new iPhone, without the headphone plug, to be one millimeter thinner than the current iPhone.

Apple plans bigger design changes for 2017, the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone
Those changes could include an edge-to-edge organic light-emitting diode, or OLED, screen and eliminating the home button by building the fingerprint sensor into the display, according to people familiar with the matter.
In the past, Apple has introduced new iPhones on a "ticktock" cycle. Apple delivers major design changes every other year -- the "tick" years -- followed by software improvements and hardware refinements in the "tock" years. It isn't clear whether this year's shift is a temporary or permanent departure from this pattern.

iPhone 7 Design
iPhone 7 and 7s will be made with a more durable material that will ensure that the phone has a stronger built. We were expecting iPhone 6 display to be made from sapphire glass, unfortunately we didn’t get to see that. So we would be happy to see a stronger and more durable sapphire glass display in the next generation iPhone.

However, iPhone 6s Touch ID is integrated in the home button of the phone, therefore removing it would mean that the touch id needs to be moved to either side of the phone or on the screen itself. Apple has lately submitted a patent were the touch id was present in the screen of the phone, so chances of our prediction turning into reality is high.

Rumored iPhone 7 Price
As far as the price of this product is concerned, it is really difficult to speculate about this. However, previously we have seen the price of the flagship products have remained more or less the same. Therefore, we can guess that iPhone 7 will come with a price tag of $850 for 16GB, $1000 for 64GB and $1100 for 128GB.
